PICTURED ROCKS

We typically don't share photos here from domestic travels, especially places within our home state, but the weekend spent at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore needed to be documented for future reference.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located along the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the United States. It's famous for the 15 miles of multi-colored, sandstone cliffs and rock formations that stretch along the shore and reach up to 200 feet above sea level. The rock colors are produced by mineral seepage; as the groundwater leaches out of the rock and evaporates, iron, manganese, limonite, and copper are left behind and stain the cliff surface with streaks of color (iron: red-orange; manganese: black-brown; limonite: white; copper: blue-green).

We signed up for a three-hour kayaking trip to give us a taste of the rocks. Unfortunately, the shorter trip did not allow us to see the famous Lovers Leap Arch but still gave us some beautiful views of the color-stained cliffs, rock structures, and sea caves. We also passed through Kissing Rock and saw a remnant of a shipwreck. For lack of a better descriptor, it was a really cool experience.

Disclaimer:: Photos below taken by an old iPhone through a plastic waterproof protector, filtered in an attempt to salvage the quality. They don't do the rocks justice.
